An hour later, Jasmine lay in Adam’s arms, their clothes in disarray, but her frustrations had been eased, and her mind and body were at rest. She brushed her cheek against his chest, enjoying the sensation of his hairs against her skin. She kissed his dark nipple and his hand faltered a little as it stroked her arm. She could have lain there forever, wrapped in Adam’s arms, and feeling exactly… right. It was the simplest feeling and yet she couldn’t ever remember having felt it before. The closest she had got to it was holding her son in her arms. But, even when her parents had been alive, she’d felt like a foreigner in England. With her mother’s dark looks and vague memories of her early childhood in Ahmar, she’d always felt a misfit. But, here, now, in Adam’s arms, she felt as if she belonged.

“You’re quiet,” said Adam, tilting her face so he could see her better. “And thoughtful. Anything the matter?”

“Nothing at all. No, I was just thinking about Ahmar. I must have been about four years old when we moved from there to England. So I don’t have many memories. My mother used to tell me about it though, and now I’m not sure if what I think are my own memories are just visions conjured up by my mother’s descriptions.”

“What do you remember?”

She propped herself up on her elbow and closed her eyes. “I remember the bright light, the brilliant white of the men’s robes, and the dust.”

“Where were you again?”

Jasmine realized she’d said too much. She didn’t know what her sister had told him about their early life in Northern Ahmar and she certainly didn’t want him to make the connection between them. She laid her cheek against his chest so he couldn’t see the change in her expression. “Northern Ahmar somewhere. I’m not sure.”

“Ah, Northern Ahmar. That is a more mysterious and less developed area, although much larger than the south. Most of the population lives in the south, where the capital is. The south still has a unique brilliance to the light which I have found nowhere else, but being beside the sea, there is a freshness to the air, and a constant warm breeze which makes the heat more bearable.” He paused. “You know, for years I wanted to be anywhere other than Ahmar. But it’s time to return home. I’m done with all this.” He gestured to the world outside the window. “It’s not my life anymore. The country of my birth is my life now.”

“That’s nice. It’s good to know where you belong.”

He shifted to look at her. “Don’t you know where you belong?”

She shrugged. “Of course. I live in England.”

“That hasn’t answered my question.”

“Yeah, I know. I guess it’s an ongoing quest.”

“I’ve had a brilliant idea.”

“Another one?” she asked, her hand straying down his body.

“Not that kind of one,” he said with a grin, kissing her. “The kind of idea which means leaving this place.”

She sighed with relief and rolled on top of him.
